The governing body of a city may employ one or more public health nurses, each of whom shall be a registered nurse possessing qualifications prescribed by the department on the date of his or her employment.

The public health nurse shall attend to matters pertaining to the health and sanitary conditions of the city as the governing body may assign. Compensation for the public health nurse shall be determined by that body.
